Day 2 | The Need for Self-Examination
“Test yourselves to see if you are in the faith; examine yourselves…†- 2 Corinthians 13:5
Self-examination hurts. Especially in my case. I don’t need a long time to look at myself in the mirror before I could see my flaws or imperfections. But don’t pity me. There’s actually untold millions of people who feel the same way I do, but understandably; they are afraid to admit it. Too many of us, love ourselves far too much to recognize our faults and misses.
But when done right, self-examination, is actually very liberating as well as empowering. For one, because it provides you with an opportunity to correct, whatever it is that go against your ability to succeed. You too, will experience such sense of freedom and power, once you begin engaging in this discipline of self-critique.
The Bible boldly urges self-examination: “Examine yourselves as to whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves…†(2 Corinthians 13:5). This is one of the fundamental reasons why we must do it, especially, as we are all on the cusp of a new year.
So how does one should examine himself? First, look at that part of your life in the light of a standard. Examination without a standard is a waste of time. As believers, God’s standard is revealed in the Scriptures. The Bible, like a mirror, enables us to see our true selves (James 1:23). We live by the standard of God’s truth.
Secondly, identify specifically that area of your life and faith that’s begging for a change. Is it your prayer life? Is it your lack of spiritual fruit? Or maybe it could be your lack of a good work ethic. Or perhaps, it is your being overly judgmental and quick-tempered. Whatever, it is, be honest about them and begin changing them.
