December 14 | The Preeminent Christ
“The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation.” - Colossians 1:15
Long before He was born of a woman, Christ Jesus was the Son of God. He is the image of the invisible God – Christ Jesus is the firstborn of all creation! (Galatians 4:4).
Contrary to what heretics and cults teach, the true Jesus was not a created being, like an angel or a mere man. When the Bible describes the Son of God as the “firstborn,” it doesn’t mean that Jesus literally was “born” by God, thus, reducing the Christ as a mere creature. This misconception goes against the essence of the word, “firstborn.” The term, “firstborn” in Greek means, “preeminent.” One is preeminent when one is supreme and superior above all others. Jesus is the epitome of preeminence.
As co-creator of God, “all things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made.” Also, whatever and whoever is “in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him” (John 1:2, Colossians 1:16). A mere angel or man doesn’t and can’t have such preeminence over all creation; except the Son of God! He alone is preeminent and therefore, God’s plan is “to bring all things in heaven and on earth together in Christ” (Ephesians 1:10).
But the world, in its ignorant defiance, has been challenging the preeminence of Jesus ever since. World religions and cults want Jesus demoted to a mere creature. Secularism wants to reduce Jesus as a mere figure of history, while Christian apostates content themselves “trampling the Son of God under their feet” (Hebrews 10:29). It is no wonder, then, that the world is in constant state of darkness.
Meanwhile for God’s people, we delight and submit to the supremacy of Christ. He is our Lord and He is our life. By His grace, we work diligently not to deviate from this conviction. We seek His kingdom and His righteousness first. No matter what. We are not distracted from Christ even if fame, riches and power relentlessly tempt us. For us, we have decided that Christ is and will always be supreme over us! Therefore, with Christ in us, with us and over us, our lives don’t need to unravel amidst life’s struggles and storms. Whatever pain or pressure we may face, the preeminent Christ will hold us together strong and at peace.
In this season of remembering the Lord’s birth, may you humbly bring your life more consistent with Him who is the preeminent and supreme of all!
