Meditations for a Meaningful Christmas

“Dear friend, I pray that you may prosper in every and be in good health physically just as you grow spiritually.” - 3 John 1:3

God is God of both of our spirit and body. He gave us our spirit which is His own breath and He formed our bodies in His own likeness as well. In the words of King David, “We are remarkably and wonderfully made!” and we are, therefore, in Apostle’s Paul’s words, “We are Christ’s workmanship!” (Psalm 139:14, Ephesians 2:10)

Thus, His blessings to us are meant to be both enjoyed in the physical as well as in the spiritual level. God is surely desirous to see us enjoy life eternal and its accompanying blessings in our spirit. But He has not forgotten also to bless us in the physical aspect. As God’s children, we must be both thankful for both His blessings in the body and in the spirit.

In His providence over us His creation, God has committed Himself to nourish and sustain us. “…He did what is good by giving you rain from heaven and fruitful seasons and satisfying your hearts with food and happiness.” Even during these times of man’s sinful rebellion against his Creator, God doesn’t allow our evil to withdraw His care over us. As the Scripture says, “He causes His sun to rise on the evil and the good, sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.” (Acts 14:17, Matthew 5:45).

But God’s benevolence is also demonstrated to us, His children, but in a more dramatic fashion and certainly, in a more abundant measure! Apostle Peter says, “His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness…” In the meantime, Apostle John declares that “From His abundance we have all received one gracious blessing after another.” Undoubtedly, we are well cared for! (John 1:16, 2 Peter 1:3)

Yet these blessings of God could only be enjoyed and preserved best in godliness. Apostle Paul reveals that “godliness is profitable for everything, since it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come” (1 Timothy 4:8). In other words, godliness not only preserves our whole, but it enables us to also enjoy and relish the blessings of God today. Sin and its ways rob us of the blessings of life. Sin makes one poor, broken and sick. But godliness will make one rich, strong and healthy! There is truly just one way of life to live and that is to be godly!

God has greater blessings in store for us this new year 2018. Receive and relish them in holiness. By all means, seek to strengthen your faith more. But stay physically healthy as well. Love God with everything that you are, but don’t fail to also cultivate friendships that are healthy as well as affirming. Invest more financially and materially in God’s work but also exercise financial prudence if you are to stay a worthy trustee of God’s blessings. This 2018, get ready to be blessed and be a blessing yourself!
