December 11 | Spread the Word
“When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child.” - Luke 2:17
The shepherds in the field have never seen nor heard anything like what they have seen and heard on that unforgettable night! Angels, legions and legions of them, as far as their eyes could see, suddenly appeared before them. Iridescent, towering and glorious, the presence of the angels lit up the field like the noonday sun! (v.13).
“Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; He is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger. Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests!” they proclaimed (vv. 10-14).
Although dazed, yet, the shepherds hastened to see for themselves the newly born Savior in Bethlehem. They searched from house to house but they couldn’t find anyone who had just given birth. Then, someone tipped them off about a man who brought his expecting wife to a manger at the outskirts of the village. “He must be the one!” the shepherds, thought (v.15).
The shepherds reached the manger. Cautiously but eagerly, they went inside the manger and there, they saw a baby wrapped in swaddling rugs, cradled next to her young mother, who was beaming with silent joy. “This must be the Savior!” the shepherds whispered to one another (v.16).
Soon, the shepherds found themselves with a new vocation as heralds of the birth of their Savior. They left their flocks and went house to house, from one inn to another, telling everyone they met, about the birth of the Messiah! (v.17).
You and I today are the “shepherds” that must bring the news to others who may not know yet the Savior. This Christmas, take the time yourself to spread the word about Him. The world needs to know the Messiah who was born in a lowly manger so the world could be saved from sin. We have seen and heard ourselves the reality of our Savior’s salvation, it is time now that the world must see and hear it too.
